I may be watching from the other side of the Atlantic but I feel the same level of dread and despair. More friends here are asking me how this regime can still be tolerated and I have no good answer. Something has to jar people back to consciousness before it’s too late if it isn’t already.
Time to pull up our socks and meet the crisis head on. Protests, agitating our representatives by phone, boycotting, speaking up. If we all do all of that it is a start. Writing to inform the populace of how dire the situation is can only advance our position. A time may come when more is necessary. I suspect we will see what needs to be done. Then it will be a matter of conscience and courage. What we must not do is to stoop to the regime's level. They want us angry and frustrated so we must not comply.
I have to think that all the various prongs of attack on our health, freedoms, media, academics, etc. are genocide at work. Get rid of all non-whites. Kill the poor. Lock up women at home.
Great advice for many people, but what you are suggesting is far more difficult for some of us. My family and my faith are the most important things in the world to me, and for the past decade, all the members of my family and my church have been on the opposite side of all of this. I live in the South, and that's just the way it is here. I did write, extensively, on Facebook, the only platform I had, when Trump ran the first time. I sounded the alarm relentlessly to all my family and friends. I don't think I changed a single mind, but I did alienate some of the people who are important to me. We've since agreed to a somewhat uneasy truce in which we simply cannot discuss politics at all. In one sense, I have freedom of speech; in another, I don't. Frustrating? You bet.
The destruction was put into place by the likes of the “unexcited” who couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a candidate, so they stayed home. It was aided by media afraid of losing “access” so it eas always “both sides”, rather than truth. It continues to be fueled by a party of congress that seems to be “afraid” of a 79 year old orange painted man, who, with 34 felony convictions if we had a functioning Supreme Court, would have been no where near a candidate, much less the “victor”. Other things as well, but IMO these are the main ones. I march, I write, I pray and hope that we as individuals survive these times, and can eventually get back the wrecked shell of a country that he is bent on leaving us with.
I watch the monks and their sweet dog walk every day, and I weep.
Our Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has floated the idea of a 300,000 person strong civilian volunteer "army" to help defend our sovereignty. I'm old, but I'm ready to fight if need be.
Thank you. I’ve taken to calling my representatives office. And emailing him. I know at my worst he won’t listen so I try to be calm and composed when I’m really ready to rip someone’s head off. I’ve write to the paper. I’m saddened by what’s happening in broad daylight. We are a nation with an imperfect past and flawed historical figures. We should learn from all of that. And not erase the ugly parts.
I needed this today. We must fight for our country. I watched Ken Burn's "American Revolution" twice, because it was so dense with history, and now I'm starting to read books by the featured historians. The hardships many of our ancestors went through to fight for their rights is astonishing. We can all do more.
Yes they are, Jen. You’re running and I sure as hell am running. You’re running, like our Democracy is at stake. Charlie is running and millions of Substack readers are running. Your normal little posting in the mornings are very important to those of us who are running for our lives. Yesterday, I worried about you, you, because you live so close to Renee Nicole Good, RIP. I knew, I just knew this would throw you off your rails. It’s swept over me like stone. Everything you posted this morning, millions and millions of readers are running, but NOT away. Now we run towards the fire. Remember, we are the storm, we are not afraid. L2tbgs. Yours. Keep strong. It’s the only way!
Writing postcards this past year for all the new democratic candidates seem so “little” in the wake of what has transpired in less than a year.
After reading Project 2025 when it first came out, I thought this was going to be bad. But nothing has prepared me for the absolute total destruction of this country, by this lunatic “administration “.
I never thought that Congress, collectively, would have become neutered (yes Mike Johnson is absolutely a spineless jellyfish). Even the John Thune’s of the world, who seemed like a rational republican, has slithered away.
I don’t know where we go from here, but I’m numb to the absolute devastation that has happened to us in the past year.
I stopped asking “what now”, because when you kill your own people, and you justify it, where do you go from here?
AMEN!!!
Well said.
Thank you.
Thank you. My feelings exactly.

That’s sad, but I understand. I live in a red part of a blue state. I feel somewhat self-censored too.

Read Heather Cox Richardson. I’ve lost so many so called friends to the Faux news. And follow the Monks Walk to DC. May peace be with you

Thank you, this is why I’m a paid subscriber.

I am running with you, Claudia.

You nailed it! This exactly.
I thank God for good, caring people, like you and Charlie.
Brilliant! Charlie should be jealous. Simply saying what (I hope) most is us believe. Thank you very much!
Best guess is that Charlie is deeply proud- and fully agrees!
