Loved reading this. Feels like sometimes our days are not so dissimilar. I’ve sent off loads of paperwork to support a loan to replace the 2011 Caddy with 502,000 kilometres on it and I’m waiting to hear back, it’s pouring rain after 10 days of sunshine, and so happy I don’t have to cart water out for the plants (normally at least 4 5-litre watering cans for the pots on the patio), but the reactive one of my dachshunds is not terribly thrilled by the thunder and hail! She’s currently under my chair, behind my legs and staring at the hail outside. Not impressed for sure. I have a girl in season (again) so we have a boy group and a girl group running around again, which means extra vigilance on my part - but it’s nice having only half the dogs with me and out on walks, and then trade for the other half. All in all, coffee helps. But because of the Caddy repairs, I ate my ENTIRE birthday cake myself…. An 8 inch layer cake, red velvet with cream cheese frosting, bought for friends that would come over, but couldn’t as I didn’t have a car to go pick them up. So between the cake and some birthday chocolates from the neighbours, I’ve tried to assuage my general worry about life. Tomorrow I have to do accounting spreadsheets, I think doing writing sounds much better even if it is proper work, than doing the updates to the business model and the accounting which truly gives me a headache from staring at the screen. Anyhow — Dave does indeed look a bit grumpy. I think he’s upset that there isn’t a herd of concrete sheep for him to watch over.
I can almost taste that lemon and elderflower cake. Yum. Sending hugs to Eli and Auggie. Please thank them for giving us hope. Happy Tuesday. You hit the jackpot with Dave. He has a perfect home.
Dave does look a bit put out. I just watered the vegetable garden, you are correct about everything being dry. Got a few of the hanging baskets today and will get the rest of the flowers this afternoon. Because all of my lovely friends brought me plants and pots for my birthday my garden is a jumble of color...no pattern or palette choice but I love it.
IMO, that jumble is the prettiest way to go. I decided as much after more than two decades of creating annual displays in the little open area at the side of our driveway. I used to have monochrome pots and mixes of the same palette, but just throwing everything together makes it all pop, I think. ; )
The Cake came in first, then Dave. Wow, no wonder you consumed that cake quickly. And, Dave, I like where you have placed him outside. He is seen outside the window in many pictures of the dogs. Have a good day.
Rationalization: something I do daily in regards to chocolate!
A little sleep in and late start changes things up a bit, but the day is still looking beautiful. I hope you do visit the nursery; food for the soul!
Peonies, Carnations, Ranunculus.... oh my! These are absolute favorites in the garden for many different reasons. As someone who appreciates subtlety, these flowers are not that. They're showy; one might say divas. Magenta and pink, of course- although I tend to like yellow a lot.
I don't know what Cleveland's weather is like, but they're common in NW Washington. I have discovered one unattractive thing about this flower, though. When they die, they truly stink... badly!
Didn't know that about ranunculus. The weather here is probably a bit harsher than NW Washington, possibly drier. Our lake effect affords a longer growing season, but usually heavier snow in areas east of the city.
The white peonies smell the best. I notice that about lilacs too. My neighbor has a white lilac bush that hangs over into my yard. He says "pick what you want" and they smell so nice. Purple are a little strong for my taste. But my white peonies smell wonderful. The pink beside it don't have much of a scent at all.
Could it be that most people don't know about them, so nurseries don't get requests for them? I don't recall seeing them at the plant places where I go.
Well, you made me curious so I just picked up the phone and asked my local nursery. She said that they sell out very fast and then she asked if they were getting more in and was told "no."
Maybe they're hard to get? Weird. Or maybe a short season?
Well....depending on where you are, the blooming season for them could be over (like here in Cleveland), and maybe the nursery won't restock bushes that won't bloom again until next year. Many people want to see flowers right away. I dunno---just a guess.
J.F., could you please elaborate on the color restrictions for the flower pots? I usually don't have orange or yellow annuals but I do have red geraniums hanging on our deck and find them quite eye-catching. 🌺 🌸 🪷
Enjoy the day🙏
Dave shouldn’t be such a cranky b. It’s his whole gursh durn month! Huff! Love to the hair everywhere biggies.

Enjoy your sweets. Carpe diem. Also, I, too, detest accounting.
Brushing Sheba is a never ending job😂😂. Gotta love our shepherds.

Dave certainly has a commanding presence but he’s not as handsome up-close as I thought he’d be.
That cake… so dainty and luscious. I’m sorry I saw it this morning. I haven’t had any breakfast yet. Now I can’t think of anything else.
It’s June 2nd and I had to turn on the heat this morning when I got up! It was 49 outside and 67 in the house.
Dave’s best in profile.
Heavy sigh....the hummingbirds. Snooter smooches pups.
Lemon cake?.. But you are already.. Too Sweet! 😁😎🍋🍰 #joke
(Did the lads get a tiny piece?)
No cake for dogs. They don’t even recognize things like that as food.

Have a marvelous day!
Oh yummers!!!!! Your cake has me salivating 😋 Scrumptious.
So true re no downtime….had same when we worked for ourselves long time ago .
Lol re Dave 😁
If you hadn't eaten that gorgeous cake, you'd have regretted it for the rest of your life!
Dave looks kind of aloof. His choice, I guess. Heading up to the attic to tackle 30+ years of stuff we’ve accumulated. Wish me luck!
When you’re through, feel free to come over.
Ok.

Wow. I haven't seen a ranunculus in years, in any nursery. Wish we had them around here in Cleveland.

Agree about the white lilacs! They're divine!
I knew I wasn't alone in that. Thanks! I don't know why they're not more popular?

I just do what pleases my eye.
