Very astute. And no, it’s not really an apt metaphor. I was being flippant. It’s funny, because much of the music of that opera belies its sober theme. I’ve always found the piece as a whole rather flawed—an ambivalence that one of my novels touches upon—again in a flippant way. And I will argue to my dying day that the ending should be immediately after Giovanni is dragged down to hell, so the last thing we hear is his screams. The final sextet always strikes me as both anti-climax and trivializing.

I am jealous… honesty counts so please don’t judge me! Those flowers, your arrangements, the colors…I buy flowers for “the house” but the truth is, I buy them for myself because I just love the beauty and color as I place them in various locations. But your flowers… the dahlias…I will see what the Farmers’ market has to offer this weekend but have my doubts I will find the abundance of beauty you did.

And I do enjoy your play of color on the mantle behind Charlie during his interviews as much as the pictures of all your boys😊

Your arrangements are an absolute sunburst of summer colours! There’s nothing better than vases of flowers spread generously throughout the house. I too envy your bounty😉

My neighbour has the most beautiful hydrangeas, shaded from light pink to mauve. I have permission to pick as I wish and I most certainly do!

Absolutely brilliant colors and arrangements❣️

Brought tears to my eyes as I remember my dad maintaining his 25 ft long dahlia garden every summer. Every variety, every color imaginable, plus he’d add one new one each year. Twelve inch in diameter blooms (yes!) grew 4-5 ft tall while the smaller blooms grew close to the ground. People driving by would stop and look. Spectacular! It is a labor of love to cultivate these majestic flowers.

Pardon me while I reach for a Kleenex…🥲

Dahlias are so beautiful, but these are especially so. Flowers, the change of seasons and the magnificent Eli and Auggie will help move your writing along! Love this essay.

I share your love of dahlias and when we had our home in the country with too many flower beds(ask my husband as he did the trim around them) I took the time and care to plant them lovingly each year. Rehomed them when we moved and my daughter-in-law curses me each spring and fall. Your arrangements are spectacular and I love the many interesting vases.
