I think Pete liked Eli once Eli was out of his puppy stage, you once posted a picture of Pete looking happily up at Eli while you were all traveling in a car. (I think we only saw Pete in the picture and I wasn't sure who Pete was sitting beside so I asked if he was looking up at Eli and you confirmed it.) πΎπ
This brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful. Thank you. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to hug my husband from behind as he is busy washing last night dinner dishes. HE is definitely a keeper.
While I keep your books of essays on my coffee table, these posts bring comfort each day. I love how you expand the meaning of words to daily life and relationships. I especially focused on βkeepβ today. Ah, Pete and Eli. Quite a doggie duo.
Geez, I woke up this morning to cry through Henry Hydeβs post about Bibbyβ¦ followed 10 minutes later by more morning fat eyed crying about Eliβs love and care for Pete. Youβre killing me, J.F., but please keep it coming! π₯°
What you said at the end about Eli and Pete brought me to tears. The innocent enormity of a love like that always floors me. I have two failed marriages, so I read the first part of your essay feeling like a failure. I could list all the extenuating circumstances leading to my divorces, but they are irrelevant now. At my age I know that a successful marriage is one of those things, like cave diving, I will never experience. But I am so very lucky to have a great deal of love in my life notwithstanding, and it is pure and good.
The biggest thing about Eli has always been his heart. In his case, that's saying a lot. πΎπ
Eli's love is making me cry too early in the morning. But.....our new dryer just finished its test cycle and is singing a mechanical ditty.
The sublime and the ridiculous.
Eli has always been love. β€οΈ I continue to miss, Pete! β€οΈ

This is such a beautiful piece that is written with insightful wisdom. I appreciate your sharing. β€οΈ
Perfect. Beautiful. We celebrate our 50th next month. I think I'll read this aloud to our family that day.
Iβm honored. Congratulations.
Eli's love for Pete: thank you for putting it into words.
Oh , my heart.π₯°

Everyone has articulated the beauty of this far better than I can. I will add, I think you are pretty damn remarkable with words.
Such a beautiful essay. The promises we make.
Iβm in the middle of writing a book for couples, to help them stay together, and our views on this sacred commitment are very similar. π
Thank you. Please let me know when your book is finished. Iβll be interested in reading it.
Thanks so much! You can read the intro and first six chapters here on my Substack!

Then you are a fortunate woman.
